Question

Why is a thermostable DNA polymerase needed in amplification/genetic engineering?

Open in App
Solution

DNA polymerase is an enzyme, most of the enzymes function their best at body temperature. During the process of DNA amplification/genetic engineering ,PCR, the temperature may increase to around 60oC, leading to denaturation of the enzyme. Therefore, a thermostable DNA pol is used during amplification
Example Taq DNA polymerase, obtained from Thermus aqaticus
