Question

Why is activated animal charcoal dipped into liquid nitrogen for creating Partial Vacuum ??

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
The activated charcoal dipped in liquid nitrogen is used to create a partial vacuum in a container. The container to be evacuated is dipped in a flask containing liquid nitrogen. The principle behind this is that extent of adsorption of gases on solids is very high at low temperatures, so all the gases that are present in container to be evacuated get adsorbed on the surface of activated charcoal and the partial vacuum is created in the flask. The role of liquid N is to maintain very low temperatures of animal charcoal.
