Question

Why is adrenaline also known as epinephrine?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Epinephrine is a Greek word whereas adrenaline is a Latin word. ''Epi'' stands for above and ''nephr'' stands for kidney. Similarly ''ad'' stands for above and "renes'' stands for kidney. So, both word have the same meaning but both are derived from different origin. The gland secreting the hormone is located above the kidney. In biology we generally follow Greek origin of word, that is why in literature epinephrine is used generally.
