Question

Why is air called a mixture?

Open in App
Solution

Air is a mixture and not a compound because of the following reasons:

  • Air can be separated into its constituents such as oxygen, nitrogen, etc. by fractional distillation of liquid air.
  • Air shows the properties of all the gases present in it. For example, air supports combustion because of the oxygen present in the air.
  • Air has a variable composition because at different places different amounts of gases are present in the air.
  • Air is made up of different gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and other inert gases.
  • Nitrogen has the highest percentage of 78.09%, followed by oxygen at 20.95%, argon at 0.93%, carbon dioxide at 0.04%, and other gases in meagre amounts.
