Understanding the meaning of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC)
Alternating current (AC) - It is a type of current in which the direction of flow of electrons switches back and forth at regular intervals.
Direct current (DC) - It is a type of current in which the electrons flow in one direction and thus current flows consistently in one direction.
Applying AC and DC in electrolysis
When we apply DC through electrolytic solution, it will lead to electrolysis of the solution taken in the cell.
When we apply AC through an electrolytic solution, it prevents the electrolysis of solution taken such that the concentration of ions in the solution remains constant. Since concentration of ions is constant, exact value of resistance can be measured.
Hence, AC is used for measuring resistance of an electrolyte solution.
