Question

Why is an Atom Neutral?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

  1. An atom contains three subatomic particles- Electron, Proton, and Neutron.
  2. Electron contains negative charge on it, Proton contains positive charge on it, and Neutron is Neutral particle.
  3. Magnitude of charges on proton and electron is equal. There are as many protons as electrons in an atom.
  4. When an atom has equal number of protons and electrons then it will have equal number of positive and negative charges, which will cancel each other.
  5. Thus the atom has a net zero charge on it and make the atom electrically neutral.

This is the reason why an atom is Neutral.
