Question

Why is bivalent titanium ion paramagnetic?

Open in App
Solution

Electronic configuration of titanium [Ar] 4s2 3d2

Anything which is paramagnetic has one or more unpaired electrons. In the case of Ti, there are four valence electrons, two in the 4s and two in the 3d. When the +2 ion is formed the 4s electrons are lost, leaving the two 3d electrons which are in different orbitals, and therefore, unpaired. So the bottom line is that Ti2+ has two unpaired electrons.so Ti2+ is paramagnetic
