Charcoal is better fuel than wood because:

• When the same amount of charcoal and wood are burnt, charcoal produces almost twice the heat produced by wood.
  
• Charcoal produces much less smoke than wood.
  
• Charcoal is a compact fuel that is more convenient to handle than wood.
  

Disadvantages of converting wood into charcoal:

• I kg of wood on destructive distillation produces only 0.25 kg of charcoal making it an expensive fuel.
• For production of charcoal, more and more trees would have to be cut down which causes deforestation and disturbs the ecological balance of the Earth.
