Question

Why is common salt never stored in metal containers in our kitchens? Also, is common salt acidic?

Solution

Dear User,
Common salt is not acidic, it is neutral in nature. This is because salt in presence of moisture gets converted to base i.e. NaOH and acid i.e. HCl. This base and acid could corrode the metal. Therefore, salt should not be kept in metal containers.
NaCl + H2O NaOH + HCl
