Question

Why is Cu+ ion is not stable in aqueous solution ?

Open in App
Solution

Solution:-
In an aqueous medium, energy is required to remove one electron from Cu+ to Cu2+ but high hydration energy of Cu2+ compensates for it and thus Cu+ ion in an aqueous solution is unstable. Cu+ ion disproportionates to give Cu2+ and Cu in aqeous solution.
