Dear student. Diamond is very hard. The hardness of diamond is due to the structure of its carbon atoms. In diamond each carbon atom is bonded to four other carbon atoms which forms giant, three dimensional structure. Due to its giant structure diamond cannot easily heated up. Because giant covalent compound has many atom joined together by covalent bonds. To break all these bonds a lot of heat energy is required .The melting point of diamond is nearly 36000C. Regards
