Question

Why is distance not a vector quantity?

Open in App
Solution

Vector Quantity:

  1. A vector quantity is defined as the physical quantity that has both directions as well as magnitude.
  2. For example, displacement, acceleration, etc.

Distance:

  1. Distance is defined as an object's total movement without regard for direction.
  2. Distance is a scalar quantity with only magnitude and not a vector quantity.
  3. It means that when an object moves, the direction of the object does not consider; only the magnitude of the distance is considered.

Thus, distance is not a vector quantity because only the magnitude of the distance is considered.
