Question

Why is DNA important to a cell?

Open in App
Solution

DNA:

  1. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the genetic substance found in practically all living species.
  2. It copies itself in order to convey genetic information from one cell to the next or from one generation to the next.

Importance of DNA:

  1. DNA contains the instructions for making proteins and enzymes, which are necessary for a cell's survival.
  2. DNA replication produces a second copy of DNA, which is then transported to a newly created cell.
  3. If DNA is not replicated, the daughter cell lacks the necessary protein synthesis machinery to survive.
  4. The diploid state of autosomal cells is maintained due to DNA replication.
  5. The transfer of genetic material from one generation to the next is facilitated by DNA.
  6. The production of minor alterations occurs during the replication process of DNA which results in mutations.
  7. This is the foundation of evolution from which variations in genetical material emerges.
