Question

Why is drawing pin broad on one end as compared to other end? Explain.

Solution

Pressure exerted on a given surface depends upon the following factors:

  1. Pressure is directly proportional to the force applied on a surface.
  2. Pressure is inversely proportional to the area of cross-section of a surface.

Hence, a drawing pin is kept broad from thumb side, but very sharp from the pin side. The broad thumb reduces the pressure on the thumb, but the sharp pin tip increases the pressure on the wooden board and easily penetrates in it.
