Question

Why is electrolytic reduction done to obtain aluminium ?

Open in App
Solution

An electrolytic reduction is a form of electrolysis in which an electric current passes through an ionic substance in a molten or aqueous state resulting in the reaction on electrodes and decomposition of the material.

  1. Aluminium is obtained by electrolytic reduction of aluminium oxide.
  2. Aluminium oxide is a very stable compound as aluminium has a greater affinity for oxygen.
  3. It is not easily reduced by common reducing agents such as carbon monoxide (CO).

Hence, the electrolytic reduction is done to obtain aluminium.
