Question

Why is energy required to develop root pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Energy is required for the development of root pressure because the uptake of ions from the soil is an active transport process. Active intake of ions and minerals require energy. As they start accumulating in the root xylem, the water potential in the cells is decreased significantly. This causes the water from the soil to enter the root cells passively through osmosis. Hence a root pressure is developed by the expenditure of energy.
