Question

Why is entropy generation always positive?

Open in App
Solution

Entropy: The entropy of a system is a measure of its disorder or randomness.

  1. We know that in our universe it is more like for disorder to occur than order, hence the net entropy of the universe is always increasing.
  2. Therefore, the generation of entropy is always positive.
  3. The second law of thermodynamics states that the rate of entropy generation in a system must be greater than or equal to zero.
  4. A reversible operation is one in which the rate of entropy formation is always zero, whereas irreversible processes produce a lot of entropy.

Thus, the entropy generation is always positive.
