Question

Why is fission easier than fusion?

Open in App
Solution

Fission: It is the process by which an atom's nucleus divides into two lighter nuclei as a result of a nuclear reaction.

Fusion: It is the collision of two or more light nuclei that results in the formation of a heavier nucleus.

  1. Normal electrostatic interactions between positively charged nuclei prohibit them from coming close enough to collide and allow fusion to happen, hence fusion is not feasible.
  2. In general, the temperature of a fusion needs to be 108°C, while the temperature for fission needs to be 600°C.
  3. Naturally, a fission reaction can be controlled using several coolants and control blades.
  4. On the other hand fusion reaction, is not possible to control due to its extremely high temperature.

Thus, Fission is easier than fusion.
