Question

Why Is Friedel Crafts Acylation Preferred Over Friedel Crafts Alkylation?

Open in App
Solution

The reason is:

  • Friedel Crafts acylation is preferred over Friedel Crafts alkylation because Friedel Crafts acylation contains oxygen with a double bond in addition to R, resulting in a decrease in electron density. In Friedel craft alkylation, on the other hand, the electron density of the benzene increases due to the effect. The Friedel-Crafts technique produces alkylbenzenes by using alkyl halides as reactants.
  • The Friedel–Crafts reactions, which attach substituents to aromatic rings, were established by Charles Friedel and James Crafts in 1877. Alkylation reactions and acylation processes are two different forms of Friedel–Crafts reactions. Friedel Crafts acylation is favored over Friedel Crafts alkylation because acylation contains oxygen with a double bond in addition to R, resulting in a reduction in electron density. However, there is a side effect in Friedel craft alkylation that causes the benzene's electron density to increase.
