Question

Why is geitonogamy called genetically autogamy?

Open in App
Solution

Geitonogamy:

  1. Autogamy is the process of self-fertilization where the plants self-pollinate, i.e.., the sexual gametes come from the same individual.
  2. Geitonogamy is the process of transfer of male gamete (pollen) from the anther of one to another flower of the same plant.
  3. The pollen grains are not transferred to a different plant.
  4. Hence, due to this there is no genetic variation in the offspring, and identical to the parent plant.
  5. Hence, geitonogamy can be called autogamy as the pollen grains come from the same plant and is genetically similar to autogamy.
