Question

Why is geometrical isomerism not possible in tetrahedral complexes, having two different types of unidentate ligands coordinated with the central metal ion?

Open in App
Solution

Geometrical isomerism in tetrahedral complexes

For geometrical isomerism, the relative position of unidentate ligands attached to central metal atom should be unequal.

But, in case of tetrahedral complexes, the relative positions of the unidentate ligands attached to the central metal atom are same with respect to each other.

Hence, due to this, tetrahedral complexes do not show geometrical isomerism.
