Question
Why is graphite soft and slippery to touch?
Open in App
Solution
The structure of graphite consists of Carbon atoms arranged in the form of different layers.
These different layers are held together by weak forces of attraction.
Due to the weak forces of attraction (shown as dotted lines), the layers can slip over one another.
This ability of layers to slip over one another makes graphite soft and a good lubricating agent.
