Question

Why is graphite soft and slippery to touch?

Open in App
Solution

  • The structure of graphite consists of Carbon atoms arranged in the form of different layers.
  • These different layers are held together by weak forces of attraction.
  • Due to the weak forces of attraction (shown as dotted lines), the layers can slip over one another.
  • This ability of layers to slip over one another makes graphite soft and a good lubricating agent.
