Why is having treads on tires undesirable for racing cars (like the Formula1 cars)?
Tyres cannot take advantage of the plowing effect on hard roads
Treads on car tires serve the purpose of pushing out water from the tires when the road is wet, especially during rains. Because of this ability, the tire is able to maintain friction between itself and the surface during rains. On a normal day, a flat tire would have much more friction compared to a treaded tire, as there is more contact with the surface. Because of less friction, the tire won't be able to deform and move along with the surface, which is referred to as the 'plowing effect'.
Hence, having treads on tires is not preferable for racing cars.
