Question

Why is Hydrogen chloride gas not collected over Water?

Open in App
Solution

  • Hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas is highly soluble in water.
  • Dissolution of Hydrogen chloride gas in water forms Hydrochloric acid.
  • If Hydrogen chloride gas is collected over water, it will immediately dissolve in water to give Hydrochloric acid. Hence, it is not collected over water.
  • Moreover, Hydrogen chloride is heavier than the air. Hence, it is collected by the upward displacement of air.
