Question

Why is hydrogen peroxide preferred in the preparation of oxygen gas?

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Preparation of oxygen:

  • In the laboratory, oxygen is prepared from the Hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) which is added drop by drop from a funnel to Manganese dioxide(MnO2).
  • 2H2O2(l)HydrogenperoxideMnO22H2O(l)Water+O2(g)Oxygen
  • Manganese dioxide is used as a catalyst in this reaction.

Part 2: Hydrogen peroxide is preferred in the preparation of oxygen gas:

  • Although we have many methods to prepare oxygen, this method is preferred as it required no heat and it is a simple process to obtain oxygen gas in the laboratory.
  • The rate of evolution of oxygen is moderate and under control.
