Question

Why is inbreeding bad for animals?

Open in App
Solution

Inbreeding:

  1. The mating of organisms with close ancestral relationships is the process of inbreeding.
  2. It contradicts the biological purpose of mating, which is the DNA shuffle. Each of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that make up the human genome contains hundreds of thousands of genes, each of which has two copies known as alleles.
  3. Selective breeding practices include the practice of inbreeding.
  4. For instance, when trying to establish a novel and desirable trait in the stock and for producing distinct families within a breed, breeders may use inbreeding.
  5. However, they must be on the lookout for undesirable traits in offspring, which can then be eliminated through further selective breeding or culling.
  6. Recessive gene abnormalities are more likely to develop when there is inbreeding.
  7. Each of their parents gives them one copy of the gene. A copy of the same recessive gene is more likely to be present in closely related animals.
  8. As a result, there is a higher chance that they will both carry a copy of the gene to their progeny.
