why is inner cortex is also known as grey matter

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the human brain and is composed of grey matter, underlying which is the white matter. The grey matter is one of the part of the central nervous system(other part is white matter). The grey matter is composed of neuronal cell bodies, unmyelinated axons, glial cells (astroglia and oligodendrocytes) and capillaries. The grey matter is mainly located on the surface of the brain.
Thus, cerebral coretex is also called grey matter and not the inner cortex.

Regards.
