Question

Why is it advised that industries should switch over to cleaner fuels such as CNG and LPG in the Taj Mahal Zone in Agra?

Solution

Acid rain:

  • Pollutants such as Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are produced by industries such as rubber processing, vehicle manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing, which react with water vapor in the air to make sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
  • These combine with rain and fall as acid rain.
  • It is extremely harmful to crops, buildings, and soil.
  • Acids in the rain react with buildings and stones, especially those made of limestone and marble, that contain large amounts of calcium carbonate.
  • When acid rain reacts with calcium carbonate CaCO3, it will form Calcium sulfate CaSO4, carbon dioxide CO2 and water H2O.
  • The reaction is as follows:

CaCO3(s)+H2SO4(aq)CaSO4(aq)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)

Industries switch over CNG and LPG in the Taj Mahal Zone

  • The Taj Mahal, India's most famous tourist destination, is discolored due to air pollution.
  • This acid rain corrodes the Taj Mahal's marble.
  • This disorder is sometimes known as "marble cancer."
  • Industries are advised to use cleaner fuels such as CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) to conserve the Taj Mahal.
