Why is it difficult to light a matchstick by striking it on a smooth surface ?
Heat necessary to light a match comes from friction between match head and the surface. Smooth surface gives way less friction.
In the tip of a match stick there is present a mixture of antimony sulphide and sulphur. In the sides of the match boxes potassium is present. While striking a chemical reaction occurs resulting in the production of a lot of heat. Hence the match catches fire.
