Sperms are produced in large numbers to ensure the fertilisation of the ovum. In the female reproductive tract as sperms swim up to meet the ovum, there are various obstructions that lead up to fertilisation: Some sperms die due to vaginal secretions, or due to their short life span. Some sperms die in the uterus, and some cannot swim in the fallopian tube and later die. Only a few of them reach the ovum, but only one if successful in fertilising the ovum.
