The pressure under water is very high and hence the body of scuba diver is under extreme pressure. Under this pressure, nitrogen has a tendency to mix with blood which can cause nitrogen narcosis
To prevent this helium gas is preferred since it is inert and at the same time is lightweight hence the risks incurred are negligible.
