Question

Why is it not advisable to use non-stick pans for cooking?

Open in App
Solution

Non-stick pans require very little to no oil to cook food. Due to this, they were a popular choice of utensils for health-conscious people.

  • However, it is not advisable to use non-stick pans for cooking because the chemical responsible for the non-sticky surface of pans is made up of a type of plastic called Teflon.
  • Teflon is stable only if cooking is done below 260° C. At temperatures higher than this, Teflon begins to break down and release harmful chemicals.
  • These chemicals can be inhaled through fumes or ingested through cooked food which has adverse effects on human health.
