Question

why is it so that when the diametre of a conductor is doubled,then drift velocity of electrons inside it will not change

Open in App
Solution

For conductors drift velocity v(d)=(eE/m)t,where

E=electric field in the conductor due to applied voltage.

e=charge of electron.

m=mass of electron.

t=average time interval between two consecutive collisions of electron with ions during their zigzag motion.All these quantities are independent of diameter of the conductor. Hence, by doubling diameter of conductor ,the drift velocity does not change.
