Why is mammalian morphology very divergent?

Mammalian morphology is very divergent because mammals occupy different habitats. E.g. Sea mammals like dolphins and whales are not forms of fish and they differ in structure and behaviour. They originated from land mammals. The nocturnal bat gliding in the sky looks like a bird but is really a mammal.
