Meiosis is the process in which a single cell divides twice to form four haploid daughter cells.
These cells are the gametes – sperms in males and egg in females.
Meiosis is called reduction division because the number of chromosomes is halved in the cell after the meiotic division.
The number of chromosomes gets halved in the first meiotic division so it is called “reduction division” and the second meiotic division is more like mitosis.
