Question

why is meosis called reductional division?

Open in App
Solution

Meiosis is called reduction division because number of chromosomes in daughter cells is reduced to half than that of parent cell. For example a human cell contain 46 chromosomes, but the egg and sperm cells produced as a result of meiotic division contain 23 chromosomes. Thus in meiosis diploid number of chromosomes is reduced to haploid number.
