Question

Why is mesosphere not the bottommost layer of atmosphere when it is the coldest layer and cold air is denser than hot air?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The air molecules absorbs heat energy from the sun and raise the atmospheric temperature. But as we go higher in the atmosphere, the density of air molecules goes on decreasing. Thus, density of air in the mesosphere is less than that in stratosphere and troposphere.Due to lesser number of air particles, Thus, density of air in the mesosphere is less than that in stratosphere and troposphere.

Due to the lesser number of air particles, heat absorbed will also be less. Thus the mesosphere will have a lower temperature as compared to other atmospheric layers.
