Question

Why is mitosis called equational division?

Open in App
Solution

Mitosis:

  1. Mitosis is the process of cell division wherein the chromosomes replicate and get equally distributed into two daughter cells.
  2. The chromosome number in each daughter cell is equal to that in the parent cell, i.e., diploid. Hence, mitosis is known as equational division.
  3. Example. If a parent cell has 18 chromosomes, then daughter cells formed by mitosis will have 18 chromosomes each.
