Why is mycoplasma called a cell wall-less bacteria?

Open in App
Solution

Mycoplasma

  1. Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that lack the cell wall around their cell membranes.
  2. Hence they are referred to as cell wall-less bacteria.
  3. There are several types of mycoplasma, some of which may grow inside their hosts' cells and are intracellular parasites.
  4. These bacteria live a parasitic or saprophytic lifestyle.
  5. There is no peptidoglycan (murein).
  6. Due to this trait, they are inherently resistant to medicines that interfere with cell wall formation (like beta-lactam antibiotics).
