Why is NaCl not a molecule?

Open in App
Solution

Sodium Chloride:

  1. Sodium Chloride is a chemical compound that has a chemical formula NaCl.
  2. NaCl is not taken into account as a molecule.
  3. A molecule is the smallest particle in a chemical element or compound that contains that element's or substance's chemical properties.
  4. Molecules are made up of atoms that are chemically bound together.
  5. Covalent Bonding is a term that refers to the bonding of two or more Ionic compounds, such as sodium chloride (NaCl), which is created by transferring electrons that form ions.
  6. Ions create ionic bonds by exerting electrostatic force on one another.
  7. In a water molecule, on the other hand, the hydrogen and oxygen atoms are joined by swapping electrons rather than transferring them.

Hence, NaCl is not a molecule.
