Question

Why is Newton's law of gravitation known as Inverse Square law?

Open in App
Solution

  1. According to the universal law of gravitation, every object in the universe attracts other objects with a force whose magnitude is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
  2. The gravitational force of attraction (F) = GMmR2
  3. From the above equation, we can conclude that the magnitude of the force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance (R) between the objects.
  4. Hence, this law is also called the “Inverse-square law of gravitation”
