Question

Why is photorespiration bad for C3 plants?

Open in App
Solution

Photorespiration:

  1. Photorespiration is the process of taking in molecular oxygen (O2) and releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) from organic substances in response to light.
  2. Photorespiration is harmful to C3 plants because it reduces plant productivity, which is why it is also known as a wasteful process.
  3. Many higher plants use photorespiration as a means of respiration.
  4. The oxidative photosynthetic, commonly known as C2 photosynthesis or the carbon cycle, is a type of photosynthetic process.
  5. RuBisCO reacts with oxygen in this phase, competing with the Calvin cycle.
