Question

Why is posterior pituitary called a storage-releaser centre?

Open in App
Solution

Posterior pituitary:

The posterior lobe of the pituitary gland (posterior pituitary) or neurohypophysis is connected to the hypothalamus by nerve fibers or axons called(the hypothalamic–hypophyseal tract).

  1. The Posterior pituitary does not synthesize any hormones but temporarily stores and releases two hormones, Antidiuretic hormones (vasopressin) and oxytocin.
  2. Vasopressin is synthesized by supra-optic nuclei cell of the hypothalamus and travel along the axons into storage sites in the axon terminal of the neurohypophysis.
  3. The hormones are released from the axon terminals into the bloodstream in response to signals from hypothalamic neurons. Further pituitary gland discharged them.

Hence, Posterior pituitary is called a storage-releaser centre.
