Question

Why is r taken as r square when deriving the universal law of gravitation

Open in App
Solution

  • The force of gravitational attraction between two bodies varies as inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the two bodies. This was experimentally proved by the Newton's law of gravitation. Hence, the distance r is taken with square in the deriving the law of gravitation: F=G m1 m2 / r^2
