  1. An organ is defined as a structure which consist of tissues and cells, which all perform a specific function.
  2. The skin is considered an organ because it fits the definition an organ.
  3. Skin is an organ and it comprises different tissues which act together to perform dedicated and specific functions.
  4. The skin is not just a thin coat that keeps the delicate organs in place and provides protection, it also performs many other important activities:
    1. It protect our insides from harmful UV rays, bacteria, and other assaults.
    2. It ensures that very little moisture leaks out, and helps the skin stay hydrated.
    3. It also acts as a sensory organ and helps regulate the body’s temperature.
    4. It is considered to be the largest organ of the body because it covers an area of 1.7 square meters, weighs 4.5 to 5 kg.
