Why is so special in amalgams( alloys with mercury) that they can slow down the reaction between alkali metal and water??/

The reaction between alkali metals and water is very vigorous as large amount of heat is produced. In order to slow down the reaction, amalgams of alkali metals are used. In these amalgams, a small area of the metal is exposed to water which is turn slows down the reaction.
