Question

Why is speed of sound taken as wavelength by timeperiod and not the total distance covered by a single wave by the total time taken to cover that distance. Please explain in terms of wavelength?

Solution

Wavelength is the distance covered by the wave in one complete cycle and time period is the time taken to complete one cycle.so velocity can be easily calculated by devidind wavelength by time.
if we take the total distance and total time to calculate velocity, it will be equal to that calculated by wavelength and time period.Because velocity of a wave is constant in a medium and velocity changes only if a wave travel from one medium to another.so if we are calculating the velocity of a wave , we say velocity in a particular medium.tge velocities of wve in different medium is different.
