why is temperature in the coastal area different from that in the interior of the continent?

Temperature in coastal regions are more or less moderate due to the influence of the oceans surrounding it.But the continental interiors face extreme temperatures during summers and winters as they are far away from the oceans and they get heat up and cool off more quickly.
