1: Definition
Organ transplantation is a procedure where an organ from one body is placed in another body. This is done to replace a missing or damaged organ.
2: Factors affecting organ transplantation
● Tissue matching: Our bodies can differentiate between self and non-self tissues due to the presence of HLA (Human leukocyte antigens). These molecules are present on tissues and they need to match the donor to prevent graft rejection.
● Blood group matching: The blood groups of the donor and the recipient must match.
3: Consequence of graft rejection
If the donor and the recipient are not matched correctly, then the consequence of graft rejection is adverse, resulting in organ failure. This is because of the ability of the body to differentiate between self and non-self and rejection of graft due to cell-mediated immune responses. Hence, the person needs to take immunosuppressants throughout life.
